UBS bolsters regional oil & gas research team

UBS has made a number of new appointments to its regional oil & gas research team adding breadth and depth to its focus on the oil and petrochemical sector.

"I am convinced that the injection of new talent to our Asia oil and petrochemical team, whether it be new hires from industry or our competitors or by transferring high-calibre talent from elsewhere in the region, provides us with a platform from which to deliver a first-class service to our clients," said Nicholas PINK, Head of Asia Research.

"We believe that organizing the team on a regional sector basis will provide our clients with a unique perspective on the industry," added Pink.

Thomas WONG has been appointed Head of Regional Oil & Gas. In addition to a special focus on China oils, he will provide a regional overview of oil, refining and petrochemical stocks. Wong, who was previously the China and Korea Oils analyst at JP Morgan, is an Executive Director and reports to Head of Asia Research Nicholas Pink. Previously, he worked as regional finance manager and strategy analyst at BP and as an oil & gas con-sultant in the UK. A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he has an MPhil in Economics and a Masters in Finance from London Business School.

Peter GASTREICH, currently a member of UBS's highly-rated Thailand Research Team in Bangkok, will relocate to Hong Kong in September to assume research responsibility for refining in the region. A Director, he will work closely with Wong to provide a regional refining view. In addition to his current coverage of Thailand's oil and petrochemical sec-tor, he will assume stock coverage responsibility for Korean refining. Gastreich has four years experience covering the Thailand oil and petrochemical sectors. Previously, he worked in Hong Kong primarily supporting the UBS product management team. Before obtaining an MBA from the University of Minnesota in 2001, he worked for two years at the Asia Times in Bangkok, and as a junior economist for Union Bank of Switzerland in Zurich.

Kim Chong TAN has been appointed regional petrochemical analyst with coverage respon-sibility for petrochemical companies in China, Taiwan and Korea. Tan has in excess of 12 years of experience in the oil and petrochemical sector and joins from BP where he worked in a number of departments including marketing, business development, project develop-ment and engineering. Tan has an engineering degree from National University of Singa-pore and will the team in Hong Kong in August.

Allen CHOI joins the team as an Associate Director from Morgan Stanley and will provide support on China coverage as well as on regional products. He will also be responsible for coverage of selected stocks in the A-share market and the alternative energy sector. Previ-ously, he worked as an associate in oil and gas sector at Deutsche Bank and before joining the sell side, he worked for three years as an investment analyst at Schroders. He has a BBA from City University of Hong Kong and recently completed an MA in Financial engi-neering from the University of Hong Kong.
