Security
Technology

UBS guarantees you the best possible security measures at all times for your banking transactions. UBS also uses an interactive authorization system to meet the rising security demands of using the Internet.

Identification system

UBS uses a chip card-based solution, which does not require the installation of any software, for logging in to UBS Online Services.

Your personal authorization data and equipment

  • Contract number

  • PIN for your Access Card

  • Access Card

  • Card reader or Access Key

The system is so easy to use

Why this procedure is so secure
One advantage of the challenge-response procedure used by UBS is its transient nature: The code, which is only valid for a short period of time, is regenerated each time the client logs in to UBS Online Services. A key is saved on the Access Card. This key is uniquely assigned to a specific contract. The entire contents of the Access Card are protected and can neither be copied nor disclosed by third parties, since all security element are never transmitted over the Internet at the same time.

Confirmation of the beneficiary in payments

The confirmation of the beneficiary is an additional security feature for online payment transactions, which prevents the execution of payments manipulated by criminals.

When making a payment, you enter a beneficiary, to whom you have not made a transfer before, the UBS security solution asks for an additional verification. You must confirm the new beneficiary once.

Confirmation is not required however for all new beneficiaries. Beneficiaries already approved by UBS – including most telephone, electrical utility and health insurance companies, mail-order merchants, etc. – do not require additional verification.

You can confirm new beneficiaries with both the card reader and the Access Key – both devices are also used to login to UBS Online Services:

Card reader
To confirm new beneficiaries, read a certain number of characters from the payment reference, enter these in the card reader and then key in the code displayed in the UBS e-banking input screen.

Access Key
The Access Key automatically shows you the account information of new beneficiaries on the display. You simply need to check these against the payment reference and then confirm them.

Due to the increased convenience, the Access Key is especially suitable for processing large numbers of beneficiary confirmations.

Private clients are automatically sent the card reader, while companies are sent the Access Key. Private clients can purchase an Access Key at the cost price of CHF 65. You will find the relevant ordering function in UBS e-banking under "Security" in the top right corner.

The latest encryption

The encryption we use is 128-bit (IDEA/RC4) or 168-bit (3DES). The system automatically encrypts all data sent via the Internet. It uses highly secure algorithms to protect your data against professional hackers.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is an extremely secure protocol examined and approved by Swiss banks. SSL is used for UBS e-banking to protect all transactions, so they do not need any additional encryption software.

Digital certificate (fingerprint)

UBS supplies a certificate upon connection to enable the browser to determine that you are actually connected to UBS's security server. You can check the certificate's authenticity yourself when using the card reader (the Access Key automatically performs this verification for you):

1. Depending on the browser you use, click once or twice on the padlock icon displayed.
2. The certificate displayed in the popup window must correspond to one of the following certificates
