Chagas’ disease is still very widespread in Latin America. An estimated 8-10 million people are infected with the parasite; appr. 30% of those infected develop heart and/or intestinal disease. Thanks to control measures in recent years, new infections due to blood-sucking “kissing bugs” have been reduced, but infections can also occur when the parasite is transmitted from mother to child. Here a research group wants to start protecting as many young women of child-bearing age as possible from being infected.
