Curators
As part of the rehang at Tate Modern, Tate curators have selected significant works from The UBS Art Collection to form the second in a series of annual temporary displays. Here is a selection of some of the over 40 drawings by influential American and European artists such as Roy Liechtenstein, Chuck Close, Edward Ruscha, Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Vija Celmins on display at Tate Modern from 4 May - 11 November 2007.
About Matthew Gale
Matthew Gale is Curator (Modern Art) and Head of Displays at Tate Modern. An art historian, he studied at Edinburgh University and College of Art and has a PhD from the Courtauld Institute. His specialism lies in classic modernism, and his publications include: Dada and Surrealism (1997); Francis Bacon: Working on Paper (1999) and Barbara Hepworth: Works in the Tate Gallery Collection and the Barbara Hepworth Museum St Ives (with Chris Stephens, 1999). He has curated a number of major exhibitions at Tate Modern including: Giorgio Morandi (exhibition catalogue with Donna De Salvo, 2001); Constantin Brancusi: The Essence of Things (exhibition catalogue with Carmen Gimenez, 2004), Beyond Painting: Burri, Fontana, Manzoni (2005). As well as heading the displays team, his immediate projects include Dalí & Film at Tate Modern (2007-8) and Francis Bacon at Tate Britain (2008-9).
About Emma Dexter
Emma Dexter is Director of Exhibitions at Timothy Taylor Gallery, London. From 2000 - 2007 she was a Senior Curator at Tate Modern, where she curated exhibitions by Pierre Huyghe 2006, Frida Kahlo 2005, Luc Tuymans and Bruce Nauman 2004, and curated Tate's first photography exhibition Cruel and Tender in 2003. In 2005 she wrote the introductory essay for Phaidon's Vitamin D - a survey of contemporary drawing. From 1992 - 2000 she was Director of Exhibitions at the ICA, London, where she mounted exhibitions by Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans, John Currin, Gary Hume, Jake and Dinos Chapman and Steve McQueen.
