MoMA's back! das MoMA ist zurück!
Zur Eröffnung der Frühjahrsaison wirft das Museum of Modern Art einen Blick in die Tresore des internationalen Finanzkonzerns UBS. Die Banker haben im Lauf der Jahrzehnte mehr als 900 Gemälde, Fotografien und Skulpturen zusammen getragen, die einige der wichtigsten Strömungen in der Kunst seit 1950 dokumentieren. Das MoMA zeigt nun erstmals einen Querschnitt durch die private Kollektion.
New York's renowned Museum of Modern Art is kicking off its spring season with a glimpse into the strongrooms of the UBS international financial services group. The bank has accumulated over 900 paintings, photographs and sculptures over the years covering some of art's most important movements since 1950. And MoMA is now offering a cross-sectional choice from this impressive private collection.
Contemporary Voices: Works from The UBS Art Collection umfasst Werke von über 50 Künstlern und ist stilistisch breit gefasst. Zu sehen sind unter anderem abstrakte Werke von Willem de Kooning, einem der Väter der modernen amerikanischen Malerei, Skulpturen des Minimalisten Donald Judd, Papierarbeiten von Jenny Holzer sowie grossformatige Bilder der Fotografen Thomas Struth und Andreas Gursky.
Mit der UBS Schau präsentiert das neue MoMA seine erste grössere Sonderausstellung. Das Museum ist im November 2004 nach einem zweieinhalbjährigen Exil an seine alte Adresse in Manhattan zurückgekehrt, wo es einen Neubau von Yoshio Taniguchi bezogen hat. Der japanische Architekt hat eine modernistische Gebäudegruppe geschaffen, die auf selbstbewusste Gesten und Effekthascherei verzichtet. Angesagt sind schlichte Formen, unaufdringliche Proportionen, Transparenz und Liebe zum Detail. Das MoMA verfügt nun über rund 50 Prozent mehr Ausstellungsfläche, einen grösseren Museumsshop und neu konzipierte Cafés und Restaurants. Die zusätzliche Ausstellungsfläche kommt vor allem der Kunst zugute, die nach 1970 entstanden ist.
Den Umzug nahmen die Kuratoren zum Anlass, sich auch Gedanken zur Präsentation ihrer berühmten permanenten Sammlung zu machen. Während Monaten haben sie anhand von Modellen verschiedene Variationen durchgespielt. Die Raumaufteilung ermöglichte die Umsetzung einer neuen Ausstellungsphilosophie. Weil viele Säle mehr als einen Ausgang aufweisen, obliegt es den Besuchern, in welcher Reihenfolge sie die Räume besuchen. Die Kuratoren sehen das als Chance, parallele Entwicklungen und Querverbindungen zwischen einzelnen Stilen aufzuzeigen und so einer komplexeren Sichtweise der Kunstgeschichte zum Durchbruch zu verhelfen. Ausstellungsmacherin Anne Umland meint: «Wir sind das Produkt einer postmodernen Zeit, die nicht mehr an die Möglichkeit einer linearen Darstellung glaubt.»
The selection of MoMA extends to works by over 50 artists in a wide range of styles, and includes abstracts by Willem de Kooning, one of the fathers of modern American painting, sculptures by minimalist Donald Judd, paper creations by Jenny Holzer and large format photos by Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky.
"Contemporary Voices: Works from The UBS Art Collection is the first big biggest special exhibitions at the new MoMA. After a two-and-a-half-year exile in Queens, the museum returned to Manhattan in November 2004 to reoccupy premises that had been substantially redesigned by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi. What Taniguchi has created is a modernist collection of buildings that reject self-conscious gesture and effect for effects sake in favour of sleek lines, modest proportions, transparency and a love of detail. The new MoMA offers 50 per cent more exhibition space, a bigger museum shop and newly designed cafés and restaurants. The extra display space will be devoted largely to works of the last 35 years.
The museum's curators have also taken the opportunity of the move to reconsider the presentation of their famed permanent collection. Various options have been tried out here in model form over the past few months. In fact, Taniguchi's use of space within the new premises permits a totally new exhibition approach: with many of the rooms featuring more than one exit, the visitors can decide for themselves what order to visit them. The curators see the new philosophy as an opportunity to illustrate parallel developments and connections between different styles. And this in turn should help promote a more sophisticated view of the history of art in general. Or, as curator Anne Umland puts it: "We're the product of a post modern age that no longer believes in the possibilities of linear presentation."
