Curator - European, American and Latin American Art


Joanne Bernstein is a London-based curator. She has a BA Hons degree in Art History and an MA in Gallery Studies from Essex University. She has a long-standing interest in Latin America and has carried out extensive research in its contemporary art and architecture. She curated the first exhibition in Britain of contemporary art from Central America, Tierra de Tempestades: New Art from Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua (1994-5). She has organised exhibitions at Tate Liverpool, the Serpentine Gallery, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Camden Arts Centre in London and was Director of Lorence Monk Gallery in New York from 1990-91.

For five years Joanne was Visual Arts Programmer at London’s South Bank Centre where she commissioned a series of site-specific installations by British and international artists – including Laurie Anderson, Jorge Pardo, Angela de la Cruz, John Frankland and Vong Phaophanit. She also made documentary photography exhibitions such as Beyond the Fall: The Former Soviet Bloc in Transition 1989-99 and Sarajevo: a city and its people under siege, as well as historical surveys including Yoko Ono and Fluxus and Destroy: Punk Graphic Design in Britain.

In 2000 Joanne joined Tate as International Manager, responsible for a programme of touring exhibitions drawn from Tate Collections, for which she travelled extensively in North and South America, Australasia and Europe. For São Paulo she curated A Bigger Splash: British Art from Tate 1960-2003.  She was most recently at the Hayward Gallery, London where she organised Rebecca Horn: Bodylandscapes (2005) and is co-curating an exhibition about the representation of sex in art over 2000 years for the Barbican Art Gallery, London in 2007.
