The UBS Art Gallery Open Eyes: Children’s Art from Studio in a School
Organized by The Studio in a School Association and sponsored by UBS
On view at The UBS Art Gallery, November 22, 2007 – January 11, 2008
Gallery Reception: Thursday, November 29, 2007
NEW YORK CITY, October 2007 — A new exhibition at The UBS Art Gallery (1285 Avenue of the Americas, New York City) will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Studio in a School, a pioneering visual arts education organization that brings professional artists into New York City public schools, community organizations and childcare centers. On view from November 22, 2007 through January 11, 2008, Open Eyes: Children’s Art from Studio in a School will feature approximately 300 works by pre-kindergarten to 12th grade students from all five boroughs that demonstrate an imaginative use of color and materials, innovative techniques, and unique views of a wide range of subjects. The exhibition will open to the public on November 22, 2007 and The UBS Art Gallery will host a special reception on November 29, 2007. At 180 Studio in a School sites annually, children work closely for months or over the entire school year with a dedicated professional artist who shares tools and techniques for making art in a rich variety of media. Providing opportunities for exploration, discovery and sharing, these art-making activities foster rich learning experiences that support skills and behavior intrinsic to intellectual and social growth. Open Eyes will highlight the work created during these collaborations, including colorful paintings and drawings, intricate prints and vibrant collages that depict animals, city scenes, landscapes, portraits and imaginary creations.
25 Years Later: Welcome to Art in General is made possible by UBS.
In addition to artworks by individual students, the exhibition will feature group projects. Highlights include a series of large insect sculptures that display the animals’ beautiful symmetry and detailed anatomy, a panoramic collage documenting the cityscape of one school’s Brooklyn neighborhood, and a colorful Ndebele-inspired house—so large children can enter and play inside—that echoes the buildings and designs of South Africa. | Studio in a School | | | Collaged transportation mural Artwork: Group Project | |
Studio in a School's mission is to foster the creative and intellectual development of young people through quality visual arts programs directed by professional artists, and to collaborate with and enhance the capacity of those who provide and support arts programming for youth in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. | | | | Portrait of a boy in front of cityscape (Manhattan)

Studio in a School is a not-for-profit organization that, through the guidance of professional artists, provides visual arts programs to the city's youth, working in schools, childcare centers and community centers. Founded in 1977 by philanthropist and President Emerita of The Museum of Modern Art, Agnes Gund, at a time when arts programs were virtually eliminated from public schools due to fiscal constraints, the organization has served hundreds of thousands of New York City students. In 2004, Studio in a School played an instrumental role in creating the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, the first comprehensive, multi-dimensional kindergarten through 12th grade framework for arts education ever designed for use throughout the New York City school system.
