25 Years Later: Welcome to Art in General
25 Years Later: Welcome to Art in General

Organized by Art in General and sponsored by UBS
On view at The UBS Art Gallery, August 16 – November 9, 2007

NEW YORK CITY, July 2007—A new exhibition at The UBS Art Gallery in midtown Manhattan will present ten new and recent works of performance, audio and installation art that engage the public through a variety of strategies. 25 Years Later: Welcome to Art in General will be on view at The UBS Art Gallery (1285 Avenue of the Americas between 51st and 52nd Streets) from August 16 through November 9, 2007. On the occasion of Art in General’s 25th anniversary, the exhibition will celebrate the groundbreaking institution that has supported local and international artists for a quarter century.

In The Complex, So. Cal, Multi-4, Kianga Ford invites individuals into cocoon-like pods in which they can listen to recorded narratives from a fictional apartment complex. Surasi Kusolwong raises questions around competition, consumption and international power relationships through an installation entitled Ping-Pong (New York Common Sense) that revolves around a ping-pong table. Timothy Hutchings, a sculptor and video artist also well known in the gaming community, presents a live-action role playing activity through which gallery visitors can attempt to deal with imagined catastrophes. Jirí Skála presents two desks at which people copy one another’s handwriting in Exchange of Handwriting. For his work Life/Theater: Jerry Goralnick, an actor hired by artist Lee Walton will stage subtle noontime performances on business days for the duration of the show, based on the everyday activities of midtown passersby.

The possibility of vanishing informs the work of two artist duos: Chitra Ganesh and Mariam Ghani have created Index of the Disappeared, a library based on research on immigration, and the Dutch collective Bik Van der Pol has created an installation inspired by the now out-of-print guidebook How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found. Alejandro Cesarco’s austere audio work Dedications (A Compilation of Affection) is the recitation of the dedication pages of books from his personal library. Sharon Hayes presents recorded speeches that oscillate between personal declarations of love and national political programs. Ana Prvacki will set up shop “sanitizing” people’s money, one bill at a time, with wet wipes specially produced for 25 Years Later.

25 Years Later: Welcome to Art in General is made possible by UBS.

Art in General

Art in General is a nonprofit organization that assists artists with the production and presentation of new work. It changes in response to the needs of artists and informs and engages the public about their work.

Art in General was founded in 1981 in Lower Manhattan by artists Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka in the General Hardware building (hence the name Art in General). Their goal was to create a space where artists could exhibit unconventional work and exchange ideas with their peers. Over the course of the past 25 years, Art in General has supported hundreds of artists and continues to present pioneering exhibitions of contemporary art in all media. Since 2005, Art in General has focused on supporting artists through a New Commissions Program for New York-based artists, and an international Artist Residency program. It also has active membership and Arts in Education programs.

The UBS Art Gallery

UBS has a longstanding and ongoing commitment to the support of the arts and culture. UBS sponsors four exhibitions each year in The UBS Art Gallery, located in the lobby of its building at 1285 Avenue of the Americas, New York City. Through its exhibition program, the Gallery offers non-profit arts and cultural organizations a midtown Manhattan exhibition space and the opportunity to introduce their programs to a new audience. The UBS Art Gallery enables many institutions to organize and mount exhibitions that might not otherwise be seen. These exhibitions encourage interest in the arts among the hundreds of employees, clients and members of the general public who pass through the UBS building each day.

UBS also has its own art collection. Recognized internationally as one of the most important corporate collections of contemporary art, The UBS Art Collection comprises more than 900 paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures by many of the world’s leading artists from 1950 to the present. To further share our Collection with the public, UBS provides permanent online access to works in the Collection, information on the artists and online exhibitions via an interactive web museum at www.ubs.com/artcollection.
