Review of projects
Review of projects The following are examples of how the UBS Tsunami Relief Fund donations are helping areas affected by the disaster.
UBS Tsunami Relief Fund donations concentrate on projects that address specific medium and long-term rehabilitation efforts in the areas affected by the disaster. Within this remit, UBS focuses on particular fields in order to ensure maximum impact and a sense of identity with the supported projects. By selecting the same themes that are also used for UBS's longstanding Community Affairs programme in the Asia Pacific region, we hope to enable partnerships to extend, in some cases, beyond tsunami relief efforts in the long term. | WaterAid, Tamil Nadu, India | With UBS funding, WaterAid will deliver a two year reconstruction project to over 50,000 tsunami-affected people .
Organization
WaterAid's aim is to relieve poverty and suffering through the improvement of water supplies, sanitation, advice and education on related health matters.
Project
With UBS funding, WaterAid will deliver a two year reconstruction project to over 50,000 tsunami-affected people by not only restoring water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to their pre-tsunami condition, but to a standard which will ensure lasting health benefits. The charity will introduce new technologies appropriate to tsunami-affected areas (such as plastic latrine pans and child-friendly lavatories), bring the first total sanitation campaign to tsunami affected communities, building a community where 100% of the people have access to a latrine and are practicing safe hygiene habits. They will widen access to safe, clean water and also work to prevent the spread of disease in the temporary accommodation where tsunami victims continue to reside.
Volunteering
Teams of 10 UBS employees are invited to run the final stage of the total sanitation of villages affected by the tsunami. Others can come as individuals to provide financial training for staff and assist with the business dimension of new livelihood opportunities for tsunami-affected people in e.g.: soap-making and water harvesting techniques.

Pitchandikulam Forest's activities include organic farming, the establishment of traditional medicine dispensaries, literacy and tuition programmes, computer training, eco-clubs and libraries, women's self-help group programs and local income-generating activities such as nursery development, medicinal plant formulation and micro-finance.
Project
UBS funding will enable the organization to teach environmentally sustainable and financially viable techniques to enable over 50,000 impoverished, tsunami-affected people to access a education and earn a living from the natural resources of their area. This comprehensive regeneration project will also work in 15 village schools, where its creative education curriculum will raise attendance, aspirations and achievement. The program also includes health education and best practice centers.

| Indonesian Development of Education and Permaculture, Aceh, Indonesia | UBS has committed funds to IDEP to build an entire village as a training center to disseminate its highly productive, chemical-free, economical and sustainable farming and income generation programs.
Organization
IDEP was among the first aid agencies to reach tsunami survivors in Nias and Aceh. The organization now focuses on longer-term reconstruction to help Acehnese people to attain food security, rebuild their communities sustainably and learn community-based crisis response skills.
Project
UBS has committed funds to IDEP to build an entire village as a training center to disseminate its highly productive, chemical-free, economical and sustainable farming and income generation programs. Using a combination of in-house and outreach education, IDEP will work directly with at least 1,000 local people to give them the opportunity to learn about, see and try for themselves farming techniques which move beyond rice and subsistence to produce internationally saleable and lucrative essential oils, soaps and honey. It is hoped that these may be purchased and used by the firm as client gifts this time next year.
Volunteering
There are currently security risk issues with access to Aceh but this is a three year program and the situation may improve. If it does, IDEP would welcome marketing and business advice for its business-start-up clients, and assistance developing and delivering the 'Small Enterprise Development' module. The UBS Ecology team is providing support with carbon credit measurement and environmental expertise.

| International Organization for Migration, Nias, Indonesia | With UBS support, IOM is building an orphanage for 65 children a year, and a non-formal education facility for the 11 orphanages (725 children) on the Indonesian island of Nias.
Organization
IOM is an inter-governmental organisation which works with migrants and governments to respond to migration challenges such as the tsunami, which has left over a million people homeless and vulnerable to the increased levels of child and female trafficking. It does so, in part, by empowering vulnerable parties to earn a living and providing safe zones for orphaned children.
Project
With UBS support, IOM is building an orphanage for 65 children a year, and a non-formal education facility for the 11 orphanages (725 children) on the Indonesian island of Nias. Nias has been devastated not only by the tsunami but also by subsequent earthquakes in 2005. The UBS-funded facilities are designed to rehabilitate the children and protect them from dangerous outside influences such as child traffickers. The vocational education is not confined to the orphanages' non-formal education facility as UBS is also funding a livelihood program for 500 parents to provide them with long term access to capital through commercial vending (e.g. duck eggs, groceries, food, cafes), agriculture (including salt farming and duck husbandry), fish-drying/salting and food production. The livelihood program also aims to raise awareness of trafficking risks and techniques amongst 3,000 Nias people.
Volunteering
Employees are invited to assist IOM's displaced people in learning business skills (accounting, marketing, finance), to teach skills to small groups at the orphanage education facility and also to assist those who are rebuilding their businesses by decorating and renovating their premises.
