Interview

Throughout the interview process, you will undergo an objective assessment against UBS's seven core competency requirements, outlined in the How we assess you section.

In essence, you already know what we’re looking for and how we’re going to evaluate you. Your next challenge is to demonstrate to us that you have the competencies necessary for the position you are applying for.

So, consider the position to which you are applying and re-read the job description carefully. This will give you some insight to help in your preparation for the interview.

Keep in mind:

  • Your application is the means by which we see whether you display the basic core competencies.

  • Your interview is the means by which we evaluate your competencies more strategically, matching ‘best fits’ with the position you are applying for.

Six things to know:

1. Know how to answer positive competency questions.
How have you displayed certain competencies throughout your schooling and work experience? Be able to give specific examples and experiences.

2. Know how to answer negative competency questions.
In certain situations, how have you failed to display certain competencies when they were needed? What have you learned from these experiences?

3. Know what’s going on in the industry.
Which areas of the industry interest you? Which areas of the industry are currently in the news? Be able to show that you have a sense of the market.

4. Know how to be brief.
Keep your answers on track and to-the-point, especially when you’re relating experiences to core competencies. Time is almost always a factor in an interview.

5. Know the company and the position you’re interviewing for.
Research the job you’ve applied for and UBS as a company. Seek information about our businesses and our culture.

6. Know how to ask insightful questions.
If something seems confusing, ask for clarification. If you have a question but the conversation moves to another topic, try to address it at the end of the interview.

Prepare several end-of-interview questions to help highlight what makes UBS the best fit for you.
