Application

How do you evaluate applicants?
Generally speaking, we look for candidates with the following characteristics:

  • Above-average marks/honors from a university or university of applied sciences (Master or Bachelor), completed within an appropriate period of time

  • Relevant internships at different companies (internships at UBS also considered)

  • International experience (study or internships)

  • Excellent German and/or English language skills; other languages are also advantageous

  • Good analytical skills

  • Team player, flexible, motivated

  • Maximum one year of work experience

When is the best time to apply?
Because each region has a slightly different timetable, it is difficult to generalize beyond saying that you should be within a two to six-month range to start working. The best approach is to check our website from time to time for open positions. After finding an opening of interest, contact the responsible recruiter for details regarding the position. If you don’t find an appropriate position on our website, you can always submit a speculative application. We then check for any upcoming graduate training program/internship opportunities in your desired area.

Do you accept CVs / résumés?
In almost all cases we accept online applications in the format provided. For more information please go to the application information section of this website.

What does the application process look like in detail?
Application paths vary by business and region but tend to correspond to the following model:

Application Process

I have applied before and was unsuccessful. Can I re-apply?
Yes. You are welcome to re-apply if your qualifications and experience meet our general eligibility criteria. If not, you may wish to consider applying to join UBS as a direct hire.

Graduate training

Are graduate training programs open to Bachelor’s and Master's degree holders?
We accept both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree holders, accommodating our business areas’ preferences and the specific educational criteria for the positions.

Are rotations to different departments or even abroad part of all graduate training programs? We cannot guarantee a rotation or short-term placement but they are a feature of most programs and are usually within related departments.

What is the main difference between joining UBS as a graduate trainee and as a direct hire?
Our graduate training programs are appropriate for applicants with little work experience but great potential. They provide structured development through on- and off-the-job training, networking, coaching and short-term rotations that provide opportunities to look into other areas of the company.

The direct hire option is appropriate for applicants who have substantial work experience, where the benefit of a traineeship is limited for both parties. It may also suit applicants who are more interested in the rigors and challenges of a full-time position than more structured learning and development. Direct hire is also an option for applicants who do not fulfill all of our graduate criteria.

Career management

Does UBS offer regular employment upon completing the graduate training program?
Depending on the location of hire and applicable local labor law requirements, graduate training program participants may either be hired into a position that they stay in after their program ends, or they may be expected to conduct their own job search whilst enrolled in the program, which ideally should correspond with their area of deployment.

Our goal is to retain our graduate training program participants wherever feasible, however, a position outside of the program cannot be guaranteed.

What form does a typical career within UBS take? How will UBS help me develop?
Given the many business areas within UBS, each person’s career path is certain to be different. Each job is assigned specific responsibilities and clearly defined skills and behaviors, and we have a leading-edge performance management process that measures your accomplishments and progress. We provide a framework for ongoing discussion between you and your manager and a place to consider and record your longer term career development goals, but ultimately it is up to you take responsibility for your personal and professional development.

About us

What's the culture like at UBS? Are there differences between business groups and regions? There are certainly differences of management style and corporate culture across the company. Even individual teams develop their own style based on their composition and the personalities of the team members. However, we all share common aspirations, common values and a common corporate identity. Our one-firm business model encourages us to work together across organizational, cultural and national boundaries to achieve common goals and cooperate in developing and delivering our products and services to our clients.

How committed is UBS to diversity and work/life balance?
Diversity is one of our core values. We value diversity as teams composed of people with diverse backgrounds, skills and experiences are better able to understand and address our clients’ needs. We therefore seek to cultivate an open and inclusive culture, where employees are able to maximize their potential.

We have workplace policies that address fair treatment, professional behavior, maternal / parental leave, harassment prevention and most recently, internal entertainment. Diversity has been integrated into daily management processes such as recruiting, talent development and performance management and is also addressed through training and development programs. Furthermore, dedicated employee networks actively promote issues relating to gender, race and cultural awareness, and family matters in the workplace through regular events and networking activities.

As a conscientious employer, we recognize that job satisfaction is not just about achieving outstanding results and that there has to be a balance between professional accomplishment and personal fulfillment. We provide a range of work-life balance options to accommodate the individual priorities and concerns of our employees.

These include working from home, flexible hours and part-time options, taking into account the needs of the business. Benefits vary by region but often include options that can help with addressing issues and needs outside of the workplace. We also offer Employee Assistance Programs in a number of locations. These programs offer confidential support to help employees balance their work, family and personal needs and resolve issues that occur in everyday life.

What is UBS doing to be a responsible corporation?
We firmly believe that sustainable growth and investment for any business also depends on what it does above and beyond the requirements of laws and regulations. Responsible behavior is an important part of our culture, identity and working practices.

We are committed to creating a working environment based on the values of equal opportunity, diversity and meritocracy. We have also adopted measures to protect the environment, adhere to high social standards and contribute to the well-being of our local communities wherever we do business. All our activities are underpinned by our governance structure, which complies with the leading codes of best practice.

Our global environmental management system is certified to the highest standard. We are addressing climate change by focusing on more efficient and sustainable management of our energy requirements and reducing our carbon emissions.

Preventing money laundering and terrorist financing are important contributions to society and we take our duty to protect the integrity of the financial system extremely seriously.

We have strong expertise in incorporating environmental and social aspects into our research and advisory activities and offer socially responsible investment products to our clients.

Our well-established community affairs program focuses on the key themes of empowerment through education, building a stronger community and the environment.
