THE 2009 PLAYERS Championship again proved itself to be one of the games premiere events. With a final round that was close to perfect, Swedish pro golfer Henrik Stenson clinched the title at the Championship held at the famed PLAYERS Stadium Course.
THE PLAYERS has long been considered one of the premiere events on the PGA TOUR calendar. The Championship features the strongest field in golf, as well as the sports richest purse. And, of course, the venue plays a key role too with Pete Dyes PLAYERS Stadium Course and its famous 17th hole often taking center stage during the tournament.
In 2009, the best players in the world once again met at TPC Sawgrass, home of THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, to vie for the crystal trophy and a part of the $9.5MM purse (about 1.7MM to the winner). In an exciting final round, Henrick Stenson was the only player to keep bogeys off his card on his way to a 6-under 66 that gave him a four-shot victory, the 10th title of his career -- second on TOUR -- and by far his biggest.
In addition to the dramatic play on the course, UBS also played a leading role in the 2009 Championship. The Firm entered its fifth year as a proud partner of this prestigious event. Also, 2009, marked the fourth year of the UBS 17th Challenge onsite. The UBS 17th Challenge offers fans a chance to hit an actual golf ball to a scaled replica of the famed 17th hole island green, over 43,000 shots have been taken by fans over the past four years. The replica green is approximately 25% of the size of the actual 17th hole with a 33-yard shot from the tee to the center of the green, which is about a quarter of the length of the real 17th hole. Daily competitions were held, including Hold the Green, Closest to the Pin and Hole in One. In 2009 over 10,000 fans took a shot representing a 30% increase from 2008.
