UBS and the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) are delighted that their award-winning partnership, initially launched in 2005, is to continue through to 2010.
The key aims of the partnership are to assemble the finest musical talents and help them bring unforgettable music to audiences while also providing new opportunities for composers, musicians, teachers and students. LSO and UBS work together to nurture outstanding talent, inspire participation and harness the full power and potential of the musical experience, for everyone.
Through LSO Discovery – the LSO’s education programme, based at LSO St Luke’s, the LSO and UBS Music Education Centre on the edge of the City – the two organisations will run the LSO Hackney Schools’ Programme. This three-year project aims to take music into the heart of the classroom by training non-specialist teachers to help pupils develop musical skills.
As well as cultivating young audiences, LSO and UBS plan to bring exciting new works to established audiences at their Barbican concerts. These pieces – ranging from jazz, ethnic and electronica arranged for a symphony orchestra – will comprise the LSO and UBS Sound Adventures programme. Eighteen works will be commissioned in total and presented as surprise features at the beginning of concerts.
So, exploring the unexpected and embracing talent is an important part of this very special partnership. There is no greater demonstration of this than the UBS Concert Series at LSO St Luke’s, which will feature internationally renowned artists from right across the musical spectrum. UBS will also support an annual LSO Barbican Concert series and a European Concert Series.
All these initiatives emphasise what can be achieved when two organisations with common values engage in a creative and supportive partnership to make and share music with the widest audience possible. Indeed, the results are nothing less than extraordinary.
In May 2005, the LSO announced the news that Valery Gergiev will become Principal Conductor from January 2007. Taking over from Sir Colin Davis, Gergiev’s appointment will ensure that the LSO and UBS remain committed to a whole world of extraordinary music for all to share.
