Ian Hamilton Finlay: Prints

UBS Art Gallery - Ian Hamilton Finlay: Prints

Ian Hamilton Finlay (b. 1925), philosopher, gardener, poet and visual artist is best known for his garden, Little Sparta, set on the windswept slopes of the Pentland Hills in Scotland. The garden, with groves of trees, wildflowers and small streams, is a contemporary version of the 18th-century classical garden. Although it is filled with the art and words of its creator, Little Sparta is not a sculpture garden but a work of art in itself. The garden is the locus of Finlay’s work and considered one of the most important gardens made in 20th-century Britain

Ian Hamilton Finlay: Prints included approximately 300 works, including prints, lithographs, silkscreens, cards and other printed materials, dating from the 1960s to the present. The exhibition will show how ideas move from Finlay’s notebooks, changing their visual and material form, evolving from image to word and back again
