1937

After a transatlantic crossing
the German airship (Zeppelin) "Hindenburg" explodes in Lakehurst near New York.

SBC introduces the corporate logo with the three keys, which symbolise "confidence, security, discretion"

Dr. Paul Jaberg

 

Paul Jaberg is appointed Chief General Manager. This is the first time that UBS has filled this function.

1938

The German Reich under Hitler annexes Austria (Anschluss).

In the Munich Convention, Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain (GB) and Daladier (F) decide that Czechoslovakia must cede the Sudetenland to the German Reich. German troops move in and 700'000 Czechs are expelled from their homes.

UBS establishes Intrag AG, Zurich, the management company for the bank's investment trusts (mutual funds). In the same year UBS establishes the "America-Canada Trust Fund AMCA", the first of its kind in Switzerland.

UBS acquires and integrates the Berner Handelsbank, Berne.

1939

In March German troops occupy Bohemia and Moravia (Czechoslovakia) and erect a Protectorate there.

On September 1st Hitler-Germany attacks Poland. Great Britain and France declare war on Germany and WW2 begins. Two weeks later the Sovietunion occupies the Eastern part of Poland.

Switzerland maintains its armed neutrality as it did in WW1 and in the German-French War of 1870/71. Mobilization of the Swiss army with up to 430'000 men under arms.

SBC opens an Agency in New York in the "Equitable Building" on Nassau Street.

The average yearly salary of a UBS employee (excluding management) is 6013 CHF.
