1916

UBS acquires the Banque Ch. Masson & Cie., Lausanne, and thus establishes a branch in Lausanne.

1917

Revolution in Russia
The monarchy tumbles. The Bolshevists take over.

The Schweizerischer Bankverein changes the French translation of its name into Société de Banque Suisse (SBS), its Italian name to Società di Banca Svizzera (SBS) and its English name into Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC).

SBC creates a Management Committee with the name "Delegation of the Board of Directors", consisting first of two, and after 1920 of four members.

The newly constructed building "Münzhof" at Bahnhofstrasse 45 in Zurich is ready. Later on, it advances to become the Head Office Building of the bank. Still today it is the Zurich headquarters of UBS AG.

UBS sets up a Pension Fund for its employees.

1918

World War I ends with an armistice agreement on 11th November.

Switzerland experiences a nationwide revolutionary general strike of workers, at the end of which the personnel of the Soviet embassy has to leave the country.

At the end of this year total Assets of SBC for the first time exceed one billion CHF. (1001.5 million).

Total Assets of UBS amount to 387.7 million CHF.

1919

The Peace Treaty of Versailles is signed (under German protests because of the high reparation payments burdened onto Germany).

The League of Nations, forerunner of the United Nations, is founded. The seat of the organization is to be in Geneva.

After the abdication of the German Emperor (1918) creation of a Republic in Germany, later to be known as the Weimar Republic.

UBS creates a second subsidiary for its mortgage lending activities, the Hypothekar- und Sparkasse Aarau - HYSPA (Aarau Mortgage and Savings Bank).

UBS acquires 100% of Aargauische Creditanstalt, Aarau, and thus establishes branches in Aarau, Baden, Liestal and Wohlen.

UBS acquires the Commandit-AG Weibel & Cie., Fleurier, and thus establishes a branch in Fleurier.

UBS acquires the bank William Cuénod & Cie., SA, Vevey, and thus establishes branches in Vevey and Montreux.
