1896

The German Reich advances to become one of the leading industrial nations of the world besides Great Britain and the United States.

1890: Switzerland, one of Europe's poorest countries. Living- and bedroom of a family of eight in Berne.

 

The Basler Bankverein merges upon request with the Zürcher Bankverein, which has been looking for a strong partner. As a result, the Basler and Zürcher Bankverein is established.

The Basler and Zürcher Bankverein merges with the Schweizerische Unionbank, St. Gall, and thus acquires a branch office in that city.

After the take-over of the Basler Depositen-Bank the bank changes its name into Schweizerischer Bankverein. (Until 1917 the French name is Bankverein Suisse, and the English name is Swiss Bankverein).

1898

Nationalization of five main railway lines due to insolvencies, and thus creation of the Swiss Federal Railways. Thereby the Swiss stock exchanges lose some very popular securities.

The Bankverein ventures abroad for the first time and opens its London Office.
