1881

The Swiss Code of Obligations.
(Schweizerisches Obligationenrecht - OR) enters into force.

J. J. Schuster- Burckhardt

 

J. J. Schuster-Burckhardt succeeds Karl Stehlin-Merian as Chairman of Basler Bankverein.

The Bankverein produces another good result and pays a dividend of 10% as it did already in 1880.

1882

Opening of the Gotthard Railway.

The Bankverein is linked with the Gotthard Railway both financially and personally. The bank participated in the issue of stocks and bonds and some of its board members were also on the board of the Gotthard Railway.

The Toggenburger Bank opens a fulltime branch in St. Gall. From then on, the center of activities of the bank gradually shifts to that city in Eastern Switzerland.

1883 - 1887

The Bank in Winterthur experiences difficult years. Among other losses its involvement in the financing of the ill-fated private Schweizerische Nationalbahn (Swiss National Railway - not to be confused with today's Swiss Federal Railways created in 1898) forced it in 1887 to write-off one fifth of its share capital.
