1873

May 9th: A spectacular stock exchange crash in Vienna produces many insolvencies. A long lasting world economic crisis begins. It ends in the 1890's only.

Official foundation of the Zurich Stock Exchange.

The Basler Bankverein experiences heavy losses in Germany. No dividend payment is possible this year. Also over the coming years, the startup phase of the young bank is somewhat difficult.

1876

A Stock Exchange in Basle is set up.

1877

The Swiss Federal Law on Factories 1877 enters into force (a normal workday is 11 hours.)

Bindschedler and Bush in Basle (1873-1884), later CIBA-GEIGY AG, one of Switzerland's leading Chemical and Pharmaceutical firms.

1879

The difficult phase seems to be over. The 1879 results of the Bankverein are good, so that a dividend of 8% can be declared. The young bank regains its confidence.
