This year’s Annual Review looks at some major global trends and our part in them. Because of our size and scale, we do not just feel the effects of world developments - we help to shape them.

Living "You & Us"
Our "You & Us" tagline has appeared in countless television, print, radio and internet commercials around the world. People see it and remember it. We believe this is because it is not just another ingenious advertising catchphrase - rather it captures our belief in what we do and how we work.

That is why, for this year's Annual Review, we asked our employees what "You & Us" means to them. After all, it is only through them that the phrase has any kind of significance. We believe their answers, which appear throughout this Annual Review, give it extra meaning, and provide a deeper understanding of UBS.

Views that matter. In this year’s Annual Review, we focus on topics that matter to our firm. But rather than concentrating on the perspectives we have, we wanted to portray the views of other influential personalities – giving our shareholders, clients and employees a broader look at, even a new angle on, issues that are relevant to us.

For the Annual Review 2003, we have chosen pictorial themes that illustrate people working together, building the trust needed to reach for something unique. Architects and planners helping a couple build a dream. Designers and tailors painstakingly creating a special dress. Craftsmen faithfully restoring a vintage yacht to its former splendor. We believe the stories reflect what we at UBS strive to do every day – around the world.

We have chosen a number of distinct gardens from around the world as the pictorial theme for our Annual Review this year. Gardens are the product of imagination, expertise and careful attention to detail. Celebrated gardens evolve from inspired ideas that are developed with consistent and relentless dedication over years – and even generations.

Like a garden, a flourishing business enterprise requires a special combination of creativity and commitment. At UBS, we know it is the qualities of our people who nurture the success of our business. In reflection of that, we portray a representative selection of our teams, each photographed against different garden backdrops.

The Power of Partnership. Flawless strategy, teamwork, and technology are the prerequisites for competing in the world’s great ocean races. The same elements underpin success in the global financial markets. UBS is Main Partner of Alinghi, Swiss Challenge for the Americas’ Cup 2003 and is also Principal Partner of the Nautor Challenge team for the 2001- 2002 Volvo Ocean Race. Our Annual Review carries pictures of the two teams.

The very essence of yacht racing with the relentless demands of the ocean relies upon the crew to operate as a team. Whether on a match racing course, in the midst of the southern ocean, or indeed in the world of global finance – individual efforts are eclipsed by the Power of Partnership.
